James was the son of John McAlpine and Barbara Bell.
He married about 1864 in Scotland, Jane Fleming, born 1847, Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland and died between 1881 and 1892 near Lonaconing. The couple emigrated with one daughter, Barbara, born in 1865. They had a total of seven children.
After Jane's death, James married December 7, 1892, Elizabeth M. Nichols, daughter of James Nichols and Elizabeth "Betsy" [Chadwick] Nichols. The couple had four children.
James and his brother, John McAlpine, often visited their cousin Alexander Graham Bell in Nova Scotia.

Funeral services for James McAlpine, 85 year old veteran coal miner and native of Scotland, who died at the home of his son, Alex McAlpine, Knapps' Meadow, early Saturday morning following a protracted illness, were held from the residence Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, with the Rev. Selden Connor Adams, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, assisted by the church choir, officiating.
Among those from out of town who attended the services were: Mrs. James Patton. Detroit, Mich.; Steven and Walter McAlpine, Cleveland, O.: Mrs. Thomas Polland, Mr. and Mrs. James McAlplne, Aliquippa, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. David
Somervllle, Lancing, O.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank McKnlght, Cumberland; Mrs. Robert Zimmerman, Piedmont, W. Va.; Mrs. Charles Strlckler and Mrs. Ray Grove, Oakmont, Md.
Pallbearers were: John Tennant, Andrew Brody, Sr., John T. Donald, David Tennant, Charles Weber, James Ranklri, Patrick, McConnell and Harry Clark. Interment was made in Oak Hill Cemetery.
