She married twice :
(#1) Walter Garland Rodrick (on 11 Nov 1896). They had 3 children :
Margaret G. (14 Feb 1897 - bef 1970);
Frances T. (15 Oct 1898 - 13 Oct 1980);
Charles Garland (1 month old, unnamed on 1900 census) (15 May 1900 - 09 Aug 1970).
The children were raised by their Chittum and Rodrick grandparents and an aunt and uncle (Houston & Lelia Chittum Figatt). Why the children were split among relatives is unclear. Emma and Walter were together in the 1900 Census for Lexington, Virginia. In the 1910 Census for Baltimore, Maryland, she still listed herself as married but Walter was not listed with her. She was working as a Boarding House Mistress. She indicated she had been married 13 years. By June 1914, she had remarried.
(#2) William DeSales Payne and Emma married 17 Jun 1914 in Alexandria, Virginia. They had no children and spent the remainder of their lives together in Maryland. She preceded him in death and is buried beside him in Lorraine Park Cemetery outside Baltimore, Maryland.
The death information is an estimate from Emma's footstone. The cemetery's files recorded only that she was "buried on 18 Sep 1952." Nothing in the record to explain that wording or an actual death date.
