Rudy briefly attended Massachusetts Agricultural College in Amherst (forerunner of UMass) to take courses in gardening. He worked as caretaker and gardener, including a job at Mount Auburn Cemetery in the 1920s. He also ran his own vacation cabins on Cape Cod in the 1940s but later became blind from diabetes for the last 10 years of his life.
