Military, Pilot, known as the Adler von Lille (The Eagle of Lille). The Immelmann turn - a half-loop followed by a half-roll, which results in a quick reversal of direction - is named for him. He received the Iron Cross (second and first class), Pour le Mérite, Gallipoli Star, Albrechtsorden and Friedrich-August-Medaille.
The sculpture on his grave is a work by Peter Pöppelmann.
