Elected to represent Illinois's 22nd and 23rd Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1959 to 1979. Also served as a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Illinois in 1972, Deputy Sheriff of Richland County, Illinois, from 1950 to 1954, and Sheriff of Richland County, Illinois, from 1954 to 1958.
