Ida Bell (Nelson) Amiotte, 88 years old, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 17, 2011 while under Hospice Care at her home in Phoenix's west side community of Maryvale. Having fought through many tough situations in her long life including Alzheimer's disease for the last two years, she prevailed and died of natural causes.
It was in Maryvale that Ida and her husband Walter Douglas settled with their seven children when they moved to the Valley from their native state of South Dakota.
Ida was born December 19, 1922 on the South Dakota Pine Ridge (Oglala Lakota/Sioux) Indian reservation to Bill & Mary Nelson. Her four older siblings Henrietta, Mary, Cleveland & Thomas having long since passed on await her at Heaven's gate as does her husband Walter Douglas and her first born child Steven Robert.
A proud moment for Ida was during World War II when in mid 1943 she joined the U.S. Navy while living and working in Omaha, Neb. After her initial Naval Training as a WAVE at Hunter's College in Brooklyn New York she was stationed and served with distinction on the Northwest Coast working in the postal division. With war's end she returned to Pine Ridge were she eventually married a friend from her childhood, Walter Douglas in 1947. Being veterans and having seen what the rest of the world had to offer they left South Dakota by the late 1950's eventually settling in west Phoenix in 1963.
With assistance from the Veterans Administrations they purchased the house which was her resident up to the time of her death. Being raised on that Reservation by her Paternal Grandfather and his wife in the age-old traditional manner of the Lakota people she learned to speak her native language fluently as well as English which she learned while attending the local Catholic run boarding school, Holy Rosary Mission. It was by this upbringing that she heard first-hand the stories of how Lakota life was prior to being settled on that particular reservation. With pride she maintained speaking her Lakota language the rest of her life.
In the early 1970's she and her husband were active in the Central Plains Inter-Tribal Club. The group conducted some of the first American Indian Pow-Wows in the Southwest. Ida is survived by her six remaining children: Mary L. Frenchman, Thomas W. Amiotte , Louis D. Amiotte, Darrell L. Amiotte, Darla K. Beyler, Michele M. Penland,14 Grandchildren,17 Great-Grand Children and one Great-Great Grandson.
Funeral & Reception will be held Wednesday July 20, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church located at 1124 N. 3rd St. (2 blocks north of McDowell).
Parking is available in the rear of the Church. Burial will be Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd. off of Hwy. 101 Loop.
