US Congressman. During the Civil War, he served in the 8th Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate Army and after the war attended school in London, Canada and studied law in Halifax, North Carolina. He was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of North Carolina in 1868, then moved to Tennessee in 1869 and commenced to practice law in Union City. He served as Mayor of Union City in 1872 and was elected the District Attorney General of the Tennessee twelfth judicial circuit, serving (1874-83). In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, served until 1885, was reelected to the Fifty-first and Fifty-second Congresses, serving (1889-93). He was again elected to the Fifty-fifth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1897-1905). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was chairman of the Democratic Tennessee State campaign committee in 1929. He died at age 88 in Union City, Tennessee.
