Actor. Leading man of the French stage and screen in the 1930s who after World War 2 developed into a fine character player with an excellent voice and a face that exuded melancholy and intelligence. Trained at the Brussels Conservatory of dramatic arts, he was later a member of the famous Théatre du Marais and the theatre company of Jean Louis Barrault playing nearly all the great parts the stage has to offer. In films from 1932, starting with "Criminel," his greatest success was as the leader of a gang of jewel thiefs in Jules Dassins "Rififi/Du Rififi chez les hommes" (1955), a world-wide success. His other films include "Les Misérables" (1934); "Le Plaisir" (1952); "La fièvre monte à El Pao" (1959/directed by Luis Bunuel); "The Longest Day" (1962), "L´Homme de Rio" (1963), "Lost Command" (1966) and "Le Protecteur" (1974). At one time married to actress Dominique Blanchar, he died from a heart failure during an operation.
