Charles Bowlsby was born in New York, New York. He married Mellissa Jane Thompson in 1841 in New York. They moved to Albion, Michigan after they were married and had two children: Ellen Selina and Charles Edwin. Then they moved to Branch Co., Michigan and had Mary Louisa, Juliette Josephine, Elizabeth Juliana, James Franklin, Willard Lucien and Lillian Rosalee. Years later the family traveled by covered wagon to Oregon.
