Ben Stitt, 59, Watermaster for the Enterprise Canal above Ririe, was drowned in an accident at the headgates Sunday night. The accident happened in Bonneville County.

Sheriff Dean F. Wilke, Bonneville county, Monday said Stitt, who was patrolling the canal apparently lost his footing while walking on a plank at the head gate east of Ririe. One of his feet became entangled in a wire mesh below the gate. The wire screen is used to catch the debris.

The tragedy was discovered Sunday at 9 p.m. when Jack Stitt and Harold K. Howell, son and son-in-law, respectively, of the victim began looking for him when he failed to return to his home. They detected his pick-up at the headgate, later discovering the body. The body was recovered 45 minutes later, and brought to the Eckersell Funeral Home.

Sheriff Wilke termed the accident purely accidental and that no inquest was deemed necessary.

Funeral services will be held today (14 Sep 1949) at the Ririe 1st Ward chapel with Bishop J. Arlo Moss officiating. Friends may call at the family home from 10 a.m. until time of the services. Burial will be in the Shelton cemetery.

Benjamin Stitt was born July 6, 1890 in Ogden, Utah and came to Idaho in 1913. He married Eva Klinger in 1917 in the Salt Lake temple and they lived in Rexburg and Pine Creek bench, moving to Ririe in 1924 where he has since been actively engaged in farming.

Mr. Stitt was a highly respected member of the Ririe community and his death by drowning in the Ryset ditch is deeply mourned by the people of Ririe.
