U.S. Congressman. Born in Augusta County, Virginia, he studied law, was admitted to bar, moved to Carthage, Tennessee, in 1804, where he engaged in the mercantile business and practiced law. He was also Clerk of Smith County for many years. During the War of 1812, he served as Colonel in command of a regiment of Tennessee Volunteers. After the war, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth, Seventeenth Congresses, as a Jackson Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth Congress, serving (1819-27). After his term, he was a delegate to the Tennessee State convention in 1834. He then engaged in farming pursuits until his death at age 66 on his plantation in Carthage, Tennessee.
