Ole O. Melsby was the son of Ole A. and Martha Melsby. According to the 1900 Census of Wisconsin, Pierce Co., Gilman Twsp., District 106, they immigrated in 1866. He married Anna Peterson, daughter of John and Andrea Peterson (aka Johannes Pedersen Eidshaug and Andrea Gundersdatter Saugbruget) 23 May 1881 in Pierce County WI. They were the parents of Agnes, James Orvin, Lawrence, Clarence (died in infancy) Emma, Esther, Mabel, Melvin Clarence and Ellen.
Jill Goodrich Dunst, a Melsby descendant, writes that brothers "Ingvald,...Hans and Ole also went to SD from WI and bought land in Faulk County in the late 1880's. None of them stayed there. Both Ingvald and Hans moved to the Mille Lacs, MN area, where they stayed for the rest of their lives.... Ole Melsby returned to the family homestead outside Spring Valley, WI, and eventually took over the farm there." (Several of Ole's wife's siblings also tried farming in Faulk Co., SD but returned to Wisconsin and Minnesota.)
Thanks to Lisa Moschkau for the portrait of Anna and Ole Melsby and to Steve and Roxanne Goodrich for the portrait of the Ole and Anna's family.
