Faye Clark Whitby, age 94, died peacefully on Friday, September 9, 2011, in American Fork, Utah, surrounded by loved ones.
She was born in Alpine, Utah on February 1, 1917 to Charles Wesley Clark and Elizabeth Ann Williams Clark. She grew up in Alpine in a hard working family surrounded by many loving relatives and friends.
Some of her best memories are of people's kindness to one another and the strong sense of community in Alpine.
As a child, one of her favorite things to do in the summer was to go camping on Box Elder Peak where her family herded sheep.
When she told about this in her life history, her grandchildren became interested and wanted to see where she spent those fun summers.
So in her 60s and 70s, she became the leader of numerous family backpacking trips on beautiful Box Elder Peak and Angel Flat in American Fork Canyon.
Faye graduated from American Fork High School where she was student body secretary. She became engaged to a handsome young man named Merlin Albert Whitby.
Shortly after she received her engagement ring, he received a call to serve an LDS Mission to the North Central States.
While he was on his mission, Faye moved to Salt Lake City and worked at both the Lion House and the Beehive House. She sang in the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir and enjoyed performing with them.
Upon Merlin's return from his mission they were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 20, 1938. They moved into their lovely home at 196 North Main Street in Alpine. Faye and Merlin became the parents of one son and four daughters.
Faye had many talents, including sewing, crocheting, gardening, and writing. She won awards for her writing and had had some of her work published. She was also an excellent cook, her family thought she made the best bread and pies in the galaxy.
Faye was a faithful member of the LDS Church. She served in numerous church callings and was an excellent teacher.
She was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and had a great knowledge of Alpine history. Faye enjoyed traveling with her husband and they visited many interesting places in the US and Canada.
She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her hard work and kindness enriched the lives of many people throughout her life.
She is survived by her five children, Roger (Sandy) Whitby, Provo, Utah; Charlotte (Duard) Andreasen, Brigham City, Utah; Nadine (Arthur) Johns, Roseburg, Oregon; Loretta (Kenneth) Stevens, Alpine, Utah; and Barbara (Raymond) Roper, Boulder, Colorado; twenty grandchildren, forty-five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Strong, Louise Whitby, and Lola Hutchison. Preceded in death by her husband, Merlin; parents; and seven siblings, Vance, Alice, Kent, Alta, May, Lynn, and Ann.
