U.S. Congressman. He attended the Williston Seminary Massachusetts, the Universities of Jena and Berlin Germany, the Columbia College Law School in New York City was admitted to the bar in November 1869 and commenced to practice law in New York City. In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth Congress and as a Democrat to the Fifty-first, Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1893, when he resigned. He then was Comptroller of New York City, (1893-97) and president of the Trust Company of America, in 1899. He died from a stroke of apoplexy, at age 55.
