August Benjamin Barth was born 30 January 1884 in Iowa, the son of Valentine and Margaret Spongenberg Barth of Germany. He had six known brothers and sisters: Joseph (April 1877), Josephine (May 1879), Juliet (Jan 1881), Victoria (Aug 1886),Harrison (Oct 1888),and Ewing Barth (Oct 1890). He worked for the railroad for a number of years and was introduced to his bride by a fellow employee. He married Alice Eliza Burris in a double wedding ceremony December 26, 1909 with his friend Bert Graham and her sister, Opal, with the young ladies wearing Gibson Girl hats and looking solemn and a little scared. The front page of the Saint Louis Globe-Democrat featured pictures of each of the young people telling their story of the double wedding.They had no children and lived in St. Louis when not visiting home in Eldon, Missouri. Ben died on February 14, 1945. Ben and his wife, Alice, were buried in the Burris Family cemetery which name was eventually changed to Tuscumbia Cemetery.
