Terry William Bennett was a 13-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, a member of the Traffic Motorcycle Unit for the past nine years and was the department's top cycle officer. He also served as a training officer for San Diego's 40-member motorcycle unit and helped train motorcycle officers in law enforcement throughout the county. Officer Bennett won the San Diego County team championship competition for skills on a police Kawasaki 1000 motorcycle 2 years in a row. Terry Bennett, was killed in the line of duty while pursuing an alleged truck thief. The suspect made a U-turn and hit him. On the day of his funeral and memorial July 3, 2003, law agencies from across the state and nation attended. The motorcade route to the cemetery was lined with thousands showing tribute and support for a fallen public servant. He leaves a wife, Michelle, and two young sons, Brennan and Connor. At the annual San Diego Police Department awards and recognition ceremonies on February 1, 2005, he was presented with the Purple Heart award for his sacrifice to duty. His wife Michelle excepted the award in his honor.
