Last private owner of Ghost Ranch in NM. He bought Ghost Ranch in 1936. Georgia O'Keeffe gave him a drawing of an ox skull which became a logo for the ranch.She lived part time at Rancho de Los Burros at Ghost Ranch. Arthur Pack chose to donate the 21,000 acre ranch to the Presbyterian Church in 1955. The ranch had been a part of a land grant given to Pedro Martin Serrano from the King of Spain in 1766. The grant was called the Piedra Lumbre. The name Ghost Ranch or El Rancho de los Brujos came from the tales and legends of ghosts and hangings in the ranch's history.Arthur Pack went to school in FL and MA. He graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1915. He worked as an aide in the US Ordnance Department in Washington,DC. During WWll he was stationed in England as a lieutenant and became a captain in that department. He was involved in pioneering airplanes in warfare. He was publisher of Nature Magazine. He also owned Ghost Ranch Lodge which was built in 1941 in Tucson, AZ. His family moved there permanently in 1946. He was cofounder of the AZ Sonora Desert Museum and first president and president emeritus of the museum. In 1945 he donated a hospital in Espanola, NM. In 1972, he and his wife established a $1 million trust fund for St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson,AZ. He received an honorary doctorate of science degree from the University of Arizona and an honorary doctorate of law degree from the University of New Mexico. His ashes rest on the hill above Ghost House at Ghost Ranch.
