John R. O'Donnell was the son of William O'Donnell and Rosanna McAleer; he had a twin brother Frank and a younger brother William Charles. He was born in New York City and lost his father at an early age. By 1870 the boys were boarding with a trustee of the Roman Catholic Orphanage while their mother Rosanna was working as a clerk in a dry goods store. From these seemingly difficult circumstances, John, became a man of prominence in business and civic institutions.

John married Mary Louise Gardner 01 Jun 1885 and they were the parents of Edna, Elwood, John and Howard. John and his family moved to Pelham about 1905 where he was appointed magistrate and was called Judge O'Donnell. He was a member of the Winyah Masonic Lodge and appointed a member of the Pelham Library Board at its inception.

In business, John was associated with Arnold Constable and Lucille, Ltd., women's clothiers.

At his funeral, Rev. Otho Bartholow of the First Methodist Church, Mt. Vernon, New York, "paid high tribute to the deceased for his lovable character, his worth as a citizen and his desire to be of service to his community."
