US Congressman. Born in Sharon, Connecticut, he graduated from Union College, Schenectady, New York, in 1825 and was principal of Hudson New York Academy, (1823-27). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1828, commenced to practice in Delhi, New York, was member of the New York State Assembly, (1833-34) and regent of the New York State University, (1835-44). In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress, serving until 1839, when he declined to be a candidate for re-nomination and resumed the practice of law. He served as Judge of the New York Supreme Court for the third district, (1847-55) and was delegate to the New York State constitutional convention, (1867-68). He died at age 82 in Albany, New York.
