James was the eldest of eight children. All three sons followed their father into the law.

He was graduated from University of Michigan and entered the practice of law in Omaha in 1888 and became a partner in firm of Broom, Andrews & Sheean and was, for a time, secretary of the Omaha Bar Association.

In 1911 he was wed to Emily Rawlins Holman, his 1st cousin once removed, daughter of his cousin Jennie Rawlins Holman. They had two children, James Benjamin Sheean Jr and Laura Rawlins Sheean.

For many years James was solicicor for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway and was slated for promotion to president of the company when his health forced him into early retirement.

He "retired" to Galena, and lived there with his sister. He entered into a law practice in Galena that was established before the Civil War by his uncles David and Thomas Sheean. (Before the Civil War David had been in practice with James' mother's brother, John Aaron Rawlins; Thomas joined the firm in 1869.)

He was one of the founders in 1938 of the Galena Museum and Historical Assocation, serving as its president from it's inception until his death.

After a heart attack and then a fall in the spring, he had been weakened and despondent for several weeks when he was, if you'll pardon the phrase, at the end of his rope. His sister found him dead, hanging from a rope in the bathroom of their home.
