U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1786, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Goshen, Connecticut. Moving to New York, in 1792, was assistant attorney general of New York, (1797-1801) a member of the New York State Senate (1797-1802) and served in the New York State Assembly, in 1808. In 1809, he was elected as a Federalist to the Eleventh and Twelfth Congresses, serving until 1813 and elected to the Fourteenth Congress, serving (1815-17). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 62.
