U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Yale College in 1794, he attended the Litchfield Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1800 and commenced the practice of law in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He was member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1805-06). In 1807, he was elected as a Republican to the Tenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Barnabas Bidwell, reelected to the Eleventh and Twelfth Congresses, serving until 1813. After his term he was chief justice of the court of common pleas for the western district of Massachusetts, (1811-14) and First Comptroller of the United States Treasury, (1814-15). Relocating to New York, in 1816, he was appointed associate justice of the court of common pleas in 1818, was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1819 and a delegate to the New York State constitutional convention in 1821. At time of his death at age 94, he was the oldest living former member of Congress.
