He was a 1983 graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School and also a 1985 graduate of Alamance Community College with a degree in Business. Neal was employed by Elon University in the Carpentry Shop. For many years, he was a volunteer fireman with the Anderson Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed coaching with Caswell Parks and Recreation Departments baseball and basketball teams. In 2007, he coached Caswell County's first state championship baseball team, The Caswell County All Stars. He also assisted with the Northern Alamance County Hammers. Neal was an avid hunter and fisherman.
