Gurtis Miller was born on July 3,1912 in Troy, Bell County, Texas to Milton Jackson Miller Sr. and Mittie Catherine Thompson. The Miller's had four other children Myrtle Leona(1908), Jeff 'Russel'(1910), Joseph Clinton(1916) and Milton Jackson Jr(1921).

On June 9,1933 Gurtis married Eustin Eugene Clifton Cate in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas. They had two children, Melvin Eugene and Norma Jean.

At one point in time they moved to Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas. They live there for several years. It was there that both of their children got married. In 1962 they became grandparents, Ricky Cate and Angelia Pierce. Then again in 1965 there was another grandaughter, Tonya Cate.

Not sure just when the Cate's returned to San Angelo. Estin became a barber and had his own shop there. Most of the time Gurtis was a homemaker. And boy did she have a green thumb. She always had such pretty flowers, and a great garden.
