ELIZABETH RODDA POOLEY - was born in Cornwall, England, on July 15th, 1822, and died in Scales Mound, Ill. on Oct. 30th, 1909. She lived to the mature age of 87 years, three months, and fifteen days. John Pooley and Elizabeth Rodda were married in Cornwall in 1843. They came to America in 1848, coming directly to Council Hill, Jo Daviess county. Soon after they located on the farm known as the Pooley homestead, in Guildford township, now occupied by their son, Thomas Pooley. John Pooley died in 1892. These two pioneers now sleep side by side in the Scales Mount cemetery. To this estimable couple were born eleven children, six of whom are still living, namely: James Pooley of Scales Mound; Jane Pooley Gundry of Warren, Ill; Mary Pooley Bausman of Scales Mound; Ella Pooley Baus, of Scales Mound and Thomas Pooley of Guilford township. The deceased and her husband joined the church of Ebenezer in Guilford township in 1855, during a great revival under the ministry of the Rev. Mr. Summerside, one of the pioneer Methodist preachers of this part of Illinois. When this church was disbanded membership was transferred to Mt. Zion. Records extending as far back as 1868 show that these good people were always interested in the church and its work. Not only were they successful in material things, but they laid up treasure in heaven. They have now entered upon their inheritance. They were good neighbors and citizens. Their children rise up and call them blessed. The funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal church in Scales Mound, on Tuesday, Nov. 2nd, 1909, in charge of the pastor, Rev. T.C. Warrington.
