Rudolph Giese and Alma Katherine Wessels
On November 24, 1914, Alma Katherine Wessels and Rudolph Giese were married in La Grange, Texas. Rudolph Giese was born in Rutersville, Texas, on September 13, 1893, the son of Carl and Anna Woppenkamp Giese. He was one of 13 children born to them. Alma's parents were Heinrich Georg and Helena Haverkamp Wessels who both came to America in 1887 from Hohelucht (near Varel) Germany with their daughters Katherine, Caroline and Helena and their only son Louis. Because farming was good, they felt they could make a good living. They settled first in Trinity Hill community and moved to Prairie Valley community in 1893. Alma was born September 10, 1896 in Prairie Valley. Louis died in 1920.
Rudolph and Alma farmed various agricultural crops including cotton and corn and raised cattle and other farm animals. They attended St. Peter's Lutheran Church and enjoyed many local social activities. Rudolph was a member of the Sons of Hermann Lodge across from the church for over 60 years. Rudolph helped operate a local cotton gin across from the church, later buying it in 1936. He also played in a local band. Alma helped with local church and family activities, even quilting "bees" and hog butchering. Everyone enjoyed swimming in the Colorado River by the "Greasy Spoon" below their farm and craw fishing, too. Gardening kept the kitchen table and cellar pantry full of fresh and canned produce. Hand-cranked homemade ice cream delighted all on a hot summer day after working in the filed. Wood stoves kept the country home warm in the winter. Hot wrapped irons and feather beds also helped.
In 1937 their oldest daughter Lorine married Edwin Raschke who resided close by and continued the family tradition of farming, eventually moving to the "home place" (bought from Rudolph and Alma) which was entered in the 1996 Texas Family Land Heritage Program on January 24, 1997, in Austin, Texas, with the help of their daughter and son-in-law.
In 1937, their second daughter Elna married Roland Bohot from Warda, Texas.
In 1945, their third daughter Anita married Robert Foster Sr. and moved to Hempstead, Texas.
In 1948, Rudolph and Alma settled in La Grange, Texas, in their home built by brother-in-law Herman Buscha. Alma passed away on September 26, 1962 and is buried in the La Grange Cemetery.
In 1953, their forth daughter Ruby married Joe Sanders and moved to Houston. After retirement, they moved to Kingsland, Texas.
In 1959, their fifth daughter Marilyn married Delbert Gest and moved to Houston. After Delbert retired from G.E., they moved back to La Grange, Texas, where he still enjoys ranching.
Rudolph married Mary Klesel in November, 1963, and moved to Schulenburg, Texas. After their divorce in 196?, he moved back to his home in La Grange. Rudolph passed away on December 22, 1977, and is buried alongside Alma, beside Herman and Elsa Buscha, August and Hermine Giese, and William Henry and Laura Buscha.
