US Congressman. The son of Declaration of Independence Signer Francis Hopkinson, he was elected as a Federalist to represented Pennsylvania's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1815 to 1819. In 1798 he wrote the lyrics to the song "Hail Columbia!", which served as the unofficial anthem of the United States until the "Star Spangled Banner" was officially adopted in 1931. It still serves today as the official anthem of the Vice President of the United States. His son, Oliver Hopkinson, served as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War.
