Roman Catholic Saint. He is remembered for his miraculous healings and deeds along with his mummified remains, which are a public exhibition at St Blaise Church. Surrendering the worldly life, he served as a Bishop and diplomatic to Doge Dommenico Micheal of Venice. The Doge was the title of an elected leader who served for a life-time term. During a religious riot, the Blessed St. Leon was seriously wounded, jailed, escaped yet never fully recovered from his injuries. He spent the rest of his life a recluse in a monastery. Two of his miraculous acts were healing a blind girl named Gariella de Ronconelli and resuscitating a dying female infant. These acts are recorded in a painting of him. Not much else is known about his life. Originally buried in the garden at the Benediction Monastery of St. Lonezo, he was exhumed in 1207 and given the title of “Blessed”. Although it was recorded that he was a Roman Catholic Saint, even as of today, he stands as a candidate for being a saint without ever being actually canonized. Most information about him was recorded by Paolo Venecian in 1321 and archived in a box with the remains. Since the authorities closed all the monasteries in Venice in 1810, his remains were given to the painter Gaetano Gresler, who saved thousands of artifacts from the Napoleon army. He brought them to St. Blasie on July 23, 1818. His mummified body is on display at St Blaise Church for religious, scientific, and historical reasons. His body, which is viewed through a glass coffin, is fully clothed and has the appearance of wood. Other mummified bodies which are located in the church are St. Givovanni Olini, St. Nicolasa Bursa, St. Barbara, St. Sebastian and St. Mary of Egypt. Although not all died of natural causes, none were diseased. The Roman Catholic Church gives credit to a miraculous event for the mummification, whereas science has no explanation.
