ROBERTS, DR. INGHAM S.
Dr. Ingham S. Roberts, grandfather of the Houston lawyer of the same name, was a prominent member of that group of resourceful and energetic businessmen who, during the crucial periods of Houston's growth, insured the city's progress and permanent place among the larger centers of Texas. His most noteworthy service was in promoting the building of railroads from Houston as a center. He was an officer of the company which began the building of what is now the T. & N. O. Railroad before the war, and some years later was the originator of the first narrow-gauge line, the Texas Western, in the state. Having first settled in Fayette County, where H. P. Roberts, his eldest son, was born, then moving to Houston in 1843, a few years after its founding and before the city had well begun the modern period of its history, Dr. Roberts was intimately associated with the professional and civic affairs of his times.
Dr. Roberts was born at Chatham, New York, June 7, 1806. As a young man he moved west to Michigan, where he was interested in the political development that accompanied the admission of Michigan territory to the Union. In the fall of 1839 he moved to Texas, where he lived until his death, on January 6, 1885.
The Roberts family was originally from Wales, and some of the earliest known ancestors were Quakers in religion. A Thomas Roberts emigrated to Rhode Island in 1636, but he has not been positively identified as the progenitor of the branch of the family in America. The first known lineal ancestor was Peter Roberts, of Providence, Rhode Island, who died after 1706. William, son of Peter, also of Providence, died February 25, 1726. Peter, son of William, of Providence, died August 1743. Philip, Sr., son of the last named, moved from Rhode Island about 1745 and settled in New York. Philip, Jr., was born at Chatham, New York, March 4, 1768, and died November 1, 1855, and was the father of Dr. Ingham S. Roberts.
Dr. Roberts married, at Monroe, Michigan, January 20, 1835, Marion Kinney. She was the only daughter of Michael and Jane (Dillon) Kinney, of Navan, Ireland.
