Rexie Dingley was a carpenter. A hunter that morning not aware that anyone else was in the vicinity. fired his shotgun at a rabbit. The shot carried a great distance and a pellet struck Rexie in the eye. As a result Rexie lost the use of one eye for the rest of his life.
