Tommy died Thursday March 20 at Tampa VA Hospital after a brief illness but a lifetime of overcoming physical challenges. He received a Purple Heart for injuries received in World War II after landing on Omaha Beach and was shot down under enemy fire at Brest, France.
He survived to come back home and begin a racing career, winning championships here, Georgia and the Carolina's. He was paralized in a 7 car pileup at the old Jacksonville Speedway in 1954. He was given lifetime membership in NASCAR and that meant the world to him. Even though in a wheelchair he took over the garage and began a successful wrecker service for over 50 years. Death, who had long been a enemy, has brought him the checkered flag and he is now in Victory Lane.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 27 at 2:30 pm in the chapel of TOWN & COUNTRY Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Riverside Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday from 6-9 pm at the funeral home.
