Ron Gillis, 71, of Mount Pleasant died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, as the result of injuries sustained in a semi-truck accident in Illinois.

Born April 29, 1940, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Robert and Rita Johnston Gillis. On May 26, 1963, he married Sharon Goddard in Mount Pleasant.

Mr. Gillis worked many years for Control Services doing industrial weed control. In 1995, he began work as an over-the-road semi-truck driver and worked for Ruan, Heartland Express and, most recently, Shelman & Sons. He attended Mount Pleasant Schools and graduated in 1959.

He was a member of Iowa National Guard and attended OCS lieutenant training school.

He enjoyed restoring his 1948 Mercury car, woodworking and, especially, time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Bradley Gillis and Darin Gillis, both of Mount Pleasant, and Cary Gillis of New London; one sister, Rae Jean Gasper of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one brother, Richard Gillis of Skagway, Alaska; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Friends may call from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. The body will be cremated.

The memorial service for Mr. Gillis will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Revs. Earl Swigart and Brad Gillis officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
