Allan Balter was a well known Hollywood writer and producer for TV movies and series, starting in 1959. Allan wrote for Adventures in Paradise, Outer Limits, and Lost in Space. In 1964 he teamed up with William Reed Woodfield during the production of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. In 1966 they wrote an early episode of Mission Impossible and this became some of his best known writing.

He was married to Lana Wood, the sister of Natalie Wood, from 1978-1981
