Bessie was born November 8, 1914, southeast of Lansing, Kansas, in a home built by her grandfather, Christian Gaiser. She was the daughter of Jacob and Josephine (Nagel) Gaiser.

Bessie attended Nine Mile School south of Lansing, and Delaware School east of Lansing. She graduated from Lansing Rural High School in 1932. In 1934, she received a teaching certificate from Saint Mary College. She taught at several rural one-room elementary schools in Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties, and one year in the city of Leavenworth.

Bessie received a B.S. in Education from Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1946. She received an M.S. in Library Science from Emporia State Teachers College in 1959.

Bessie was the Ruskin High School librarian from 1959 - 1962. From 1962 - 1974 she was an elementary school librarian in the Shawnee Mission Schools in Johnson County, Kansas.

Bessie retired in 1974. She spent her retirement years traveling the United States, Canada and Mexico with her sister Marie.
