CENTERVILLE - Virgil W. "Dode" Pickrell, 90, of Centerville, and formerly of Bloomfield, died Sept. 7, 2011, at the Golden Age Care Center in Centerville.

He was born April 9, 1921, in Shenandoah, Iowa, to Ellis and Addie Pangborn Pickrell. He married LaVelle Pilcher Sept. 26, 1942, in Lancaster. She preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2008. Virgil served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a mail carrier in Ottumwa and awned and operated a trucking company and was also a farmer. He was a member of the VFW Walter B. Schafer Post 775 in Ottsumwa and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 1 in Ottumwa.

He is survived by his son, Marvin(Carolyn)Pickrell of Oskaloosa; two grandsons, Aaron(Joanne)Pickrell of Columbus, Ohio, and Nathan(Valarie)Pickrell of Des Moines; two great-grandchildren, Nathan Jr. and Gracelyn Pickrell; and a sister, Dorothy Cook of Stockton, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; seven brothers, Bill, Earl, Bob, Charles, Clark, Chet and David Pickrell; and three sisters, Leona Plunket, Estelle Cook and Faye Pilcher.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Monday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with the Rev. Marvin Martin officiating. Burial with graveside military rites performed by Reed-Whisler Post 78 of the American Legion will be at the Floris Cemetery in Floris. Visitation will begin at 9 am Sunday with the family present to greet friends from 2-4 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
