'Thinking back now, the Hackberry Creek held some pleasant memories and also some sad ones. It was in 1910 that my brother Alex, drowned in the Hackberry Creek. Mary and Alex were herding cows on horseback. They drove the cows across in the morning and there was hardly any water in the creek. When they were returning home at noon the water had risen to the depth of eight to ten feet. All the cattle had to struggle to get across.
'When the horse Mary and Alex were riding lunged into the swift running stream, Alex slipped off and was taken down stream and was not found until later in the afternoon.'
