The following article about John Daniel Eisenbrown is taken from Pennsylvania Folklife, Winter 1974-1975, Vol. XXIV, No. 2.

John Daniel Eisenbrown is believed to have been born in or near the village of Adelberg [aka Hundsholz], Württemberg, on 2 December 1795. He may have arrived in Philadelphia as early as 1811 [actually 1817] and was most certainly already in Egypt [Pennsylvania] in 1817 and in Upper Saucon Township before 1818 when he executed the Bible bookplate [seen below] for Heinrich Wind. [John Eisenbrown was a fraktur artist.] The Wind family was associated with the Friedens Lutheran Church in what is now Friedensville and it is quite possible that Eisenbrown was the schoolmaster for that congregation. On 22 October 1820, John Daniel married Charlotta Barbara Wolf, daughter of John George and Anna Maria (Bauer) Wolf of Zion Hill, Springfield Township, Bucks County, where she was born 16 April 1798. John George Wolf is said to have been a wood carver and turner specializing in making spinning wheels. In 1824 John Daniel took a position as organist, choir director and school teacher at Egypt Church. Five years later John Daniel, possibly after being trained in carving by his father-in-law, moved to Kutztown where he maintained a tombstone cutting establishment until 1834. Two years earlier Charlotta Eisenbrown had died after the birth of their ninth child.

A few years later John Daniel married Margaret Troxell, born in Egypt 12 August 1812, a daughter of Christian and Barbara (Horn) Troxell. This union was blessed with eight children. The second and third died in infancy and were buried in Zion Reformed Church cemetery in Allentown, where the Eisenbrowns had moved from Kutztown.
