William served as a Private First Class, 15th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Lewis County, New York prior to the war. William enlisted in the Army on March 26, 1943 in Utica, New York. He was noted as being Single, with dependents.

He was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Lowville Leader - May 27, 1948

The body of PFC William L. Strife, 35, second of Lowville's war casualities to be returned arrived here Tuesday from Schenectady on the 3:36 pm (DST) train.

The remains were taken to the Virkler funeral home, Loweville. Services were held at 9:30 am Wednesday in St. Peter's Catholic church, Lowville. Burial was in St. Peters' Church cemetery, New Bremen.

Surviving PFC Strife are two sisters, Miss Mildred Strife, and Miss Dorothy Strife, both of Lowville; two brothers, Leonard and Niles Strife, both of Lowville. his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Guy H. Packard, of Utica, also survives.

PFC Strife was killed by flying shrapnel in Southern France while in battle with the third infantry division. A combatant in the North African campaign, the soldier took part in the two invasions of Italy and was wounded in the battle at Anzio. He was assigned to duty in France when he recovered from his wounds. He was buried in a U.S. cemetery in France.

Inducted in the army April 2, 1943, PFC Strife received his basic training at Camp Blanding, Fla., and was sent overseas to North Africa in Sept 1943.

A printer by trade, he was employed for 15 years by the Black River Democrat, Lowville, now the Lowville Leader. He attended Lowville acadaemy.

PFC Strife was born Feb 17, 1913 in the town of Watson, a son of William J and Sabra Hendee Strife.
