Ebenezer R. Tripp was the son of William and Abigail Tripp.
Ebenezer was a 31 year-old Mariner when he married Betsey B. Chase, age 16 and the daughter of George and Mary Ann, at Fairhaven on June 24, 1858. He and his wife were parents to at least four children, including Isabel A., born June 3, 1871. He worked primarily as a seaman, including sailing on whaling vessels out of New Bedford, MA, completing his last whaling voyage in 1860.
He was a 35 year-old Farmer from Fairhaven, when he enlisted in that town on on August 29, 1862 and was mustered that same day into the 18th Mass. Infantry as a Private in Co. F. Ebenezer was engaged with his Regiment in 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg, where he suffered a gunshot wound to the left hand on Dec. 13, 1862. He was admitted to a field hospital and then to a hospital in Washington. After a furlough he was returned to duty on Oct. 27th and subsequently transferred to the Unattached Company of Unassigned Men of the 13th Regiment Veteran Reserve Corps on Dec. 1, 1863. Ebenezer was later deemed unfit for the Veteran Reseve Corps due to his wounds and was discharged due to disability at Camp E.V. Sumner, Wenham, MA on April 21, 1864.
