Enrolled 29 April 1861 at Lynchburg, Tennessee. Presumed older than age shown so did not serve in combat. Martin claimed to have been born in 1831 but what 'blew' his cover was his 18 year old namesake son also enlisted at the same place, at the same time, in the same regiment and with the same recruitment officer. On October 37, 1862 he enlisted in Forrest's Escort Cavalry and became 1st Sergeant of Watt's Regiment.
