Son of Robert and Isabella (Napier) Brodie. C.J. was a lifelong resident of Bremer county, Iowa. He married Hattie Isabell Bowers in Frederika, Iowa on November 5, 1885. Two children were born of this union. Daughter Olive and son Leslie R. Hattie died suddenly in Charles City, Iowa on September 13, 1917.

He followed the occupations of farmer and miller for several years and later was an auctioneer. In 1898 he was elected Clerk of the District Court in Waverly and for several years was head of the Waverly police force.

On April 6, 1920 C.J. married widow Ina Lynes Blogett in Waterloo, Iowa. Together they had one son, Charles Max. Mrs. Brodie had one son, Leonard and one daughter, Fern Blogett Messer from her first marriage. Ina died of a heart attack on May 17, 1934.

C.J. was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Eldridge.
