Robert E Earle was enlisted and elected 2nd Lieutenant on June 4, 1861, at Montevallo, Alabama, for the war. He died from a gunshot wound to his head received while he was lying asleep in his own tent, on October 4, 1861. The descending ball fell through the top of his tent, struck him behind his right ear and lodged in his left temple. His father, Samuel S Earle, Elyton, Jefferson County, Alabama, applied for letters of administration.
