US Congressman. Born in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, he learned the printer’s trade, moved to New York and was publisher of the Owego Democrat. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1805 and proceeded to practice law in Bath, New York. During the War of 1812, he served as Major in the US Army and after the war, was a member of the New York State Assembly, (1814-16). In 1817, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress, serving until 1819. After his term, he was District Attorney of the Seventh District of New York, in 1821 and a member of the New York State Assembly, in 1826. Relocating to Wheeling, West Virginia, he practiced law until his death at age 62.
