Elmer was the grandson of Herman C. and Else Petersen of Luck. His parents met at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf in Delavan. Elmer, his brother John,and his sister, Beatrice, were born at the Adleman family farm in Laona Township,Illinois. His mother, Anna Catherine Adleman (nee Petersen), returned to Luck after her husband died. She is buried in the Petersen family plot in the North Luck Cemetery.
