Ernest served as a Private First Class, Company G, 180th Infantry, 45th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Lewis County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on March 9, 1942 at Fort Niagara, Youngstown, New York and was noted as being a Farm Hand and as Single, without dependents.

He was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Utica Observer - Dispatch: August 6, 1948

Lyons Falls - The body of PFC Ernest LeRoy Potter, whose remains were returned to the US on July 16, 1948, and who originally was interred in Nettuno, a temporary cemetery near the Ansio-Nettuno beachhead, Italy will arrive in Lyons Falls this afternoon by train with a military escort.

A delegation from American Legion Post 1162 of Lyons Falls will meet the train and escort the body to the Potter home, where funeral services will be held Sunday, Aug 8, at 2pm with the Rev. L. C. Jackman, Watertown officiating.

Burial will be in the family plot in Collinsville Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded the deceased soldier.

Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.M.E. Potter, a brother, Reece Potter; a niece and nephew.
