Mr. Boggan, 71, died Thursday, April 20, 2006. A native of Rockingham, NC, Mr. Boggan was born March 11, 1935, son of the late Henry Smith Boggan, Sr. and Sara Lewis Boggan and graduated from Rockingham High School. A forty-year veteran of the broadcast industry, he began his career while in high school, working at radio station WAYN in Rockingham. He continue his career at WDIX in Orangeburg, SC before moving to Greensboro, NC where be gained notoriety at WBIG for over ten years.
In 1979, Mr. Boggan moved to Charlotte and joined WBT Radio as the evening host where he stayed for almost 20 years. He could be heard every weekday from 8:00 PM until midnight by people from Canada to Florida who would call in to be part of the show, 'Hello Henry'. His contributions to the industry and the community have been recognized by many organizations. He was presented the prestigious 'Order of the Long Leaf Pine' and was presented in 2006 as a member of the North Carolina Hall of Fame.
Mr. Boggan was preceded in death by his sister, Sara Boggan Robertson. He is survived by his wife, Jimi Taylor Boggan; two nieces, Cathy Slusher and her husband, Mike, of Hampstead, NC and Vanessa Johnson of Charlotte; three step-daughters, Mary Sandra Taylor of Laurinburg, NC, Robin Deegan and her husband Mark, of Nakomis, FL, and Jennifer Ward and her husband, Dennis, of Laurinburg, NC; grandchildren, Holly Erskine and her husband, Darin, Liana Deegan, and Heydon and Mira Ward; great nieces and nephews, Kimberly Gougeon, Amy Vaughn, Adam and Lauren Slusher, Michael Craddock, Robby, Katie and Jonathan Johnson: and several great-great nieces and nephews; as well as his beloved cat, Moonpie.
A service to celebrate the life of Henry Boggan will be 5:00 PM Sunday, April 23 at Myers Park United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. James Howell officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 at Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel.
