US Congressman. Born in Middlesex, Pennsylvania, he learned the printer’s trade, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1829 and commenced to practice law in Erie, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of representatives, (1832-34, 1855), delegate to the Pennsylvania State constitutional convention in 1838 and presiding judge of sixth judicial district court, (1838-44). In 1845, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving until 1851. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law, was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, (1857-66) and served as chief justice of that court, (1866-72). He died at age 68 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
