SMITH Benjamin H. Smith passed away Monday, January 20, 2003, at his home in Jacksonville, Florida, following and extended illness. He was born in 1916 and raised in Andrews, South Carolina, where he attended school. In 1934, he moved to Jacksonville and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He loved to garden, fish and help anyone who needed it. He was employed by National Biscuit Company for 40 years. He retired in 1978 and kept working repairing friends and neighbors lawn mowers the remainder of his life. He is survived by his wife, June H. Smith of 62 years, his 3 daughters, Judy S. Bauer, Bonnie S. Allen and Jeanne S. Collins, all of Jacksonville. Three grandsons, Robert and Richard Booth of Gainesville and Walter Collins of Jacksonville. Four granddaughters, Donna Allen of Washington D.C., Lindy Collins of Greenville, South Carolina, Tresa Allen of Atlanta, Georgia, and Kelly Collins of Gainesville. His 3 great grandchildren are Cole and Samantha Booth of Gainesville and Hannah Collins of Jacksonville. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 23, 2003, at Glendale Community Church, of which he was a founding member, with Pastor Chris Bullington officiating and assisted by Reverend Guy Groff. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends, Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at George H. Hewell & Sons Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd. S., from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32257 or the American Cancer Society, 1430 Prudential Drive, Jacksonville, Florida 32207.
