History of Shelby county

John Yantis was born May 13, 1855 in Shelby county Illinois. He was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Longenbaugh Yantis. He was one of fifteen children. After a boyhood of life on the farm where he learned the hard lessons of work and thrift, Mr. Yantis at the age of nineteen entered Westfield College and later attended Wilson Hulhurst School at Shelbyville, Ill. In the mornings before school and on Saturdays he worked for Kleeman & Goldstein. In 1876 he was graduated from Bryant & Strattons Business College of Chicago.
In 1876 Mr. Yantis married Tracy J. James a native of Shelby county by whom he had two children, Mable now Mrs. Charles Neher of Shelbyville and Juanita now Mrs. T. Clark Dove. Mrs. Yantis died in 1881. In 1883 Mr. Yantis married her sister Cordelia James and they have two childen, Ines,now deceased and Aubrey Leon.
He attended the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Yantis was a member of Knight Templar and a member of the Odd Fellow, the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the knights of Pythias, The Eastern star, the Rebeekas, The Modern Woodmen of America, the Modern Americans and the Loyal Americans. He was Grand Master and was representative to the Sovereign Grand Lodge for three years, was one of the Board of the Orphans Home at Lincoln for seven years and for three years has been Chairman of the Old Folks Home at Mattoon. He is Past Master of the A.F. & A. M. and has been representative to the Grand Lodge, is Past Grand Master of the A. O. U. W. and has been the representative from Illinois to the Supreme Lodge for seven years,Past Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias and a member of the B. P.O.E.
He was Master of Chancery of the Shelby county circuit court for eight years.
