Jacob Bergman as a young man served the the German Army as a farrier in his mid teens in the late 1840's. Then came to America around probably around1852. He enlisted in the US Army at the Presidio in San Francisco as a ferrier in Company B of the First Regiment of Calvary. Army muster rolls finds him at Fort Tejon north of Los Angeled from Febuary 28, 1959 through June 30, 1861. Sometime in late 1861 his company went east to participate in the Civil War. Around May 4th, 1862 he was wounded in the Battle of Williamsburg and was honorably dicharged July 3, 1862. On March 4, 1860 he marries Phillippina Scherer.

In 1867 he buys all interest in his "Mountain Ranch" from his partner Mr. Gifthaylor. His ranch becomes the Bergman Ranch, also known by some as THE DUTCHMAN'S, whether that applied to Jacob or the former ranch owner Gifthaylor is in queston. He was a mail carrier, Postmaster and rancher. In 1873 he was elected as San Diego County Supervisor for his district, at that time Aguanga was considered to be part of San Diego County. Postmaster in Oak Grove from July 5, 1878 til Nov 19, 1878.

(1870 census shows the ranch being in the Temecula Township). A 1880 census shows then living at the ranch ,Jacob age 47, Phillippina age 42, Henry F. age 17 , Carolne (Carrie) age 14, Marie B. (Blanche) age 11, Jake (Jacob) age 9, Matilou (Matilda) age 3 and James age 1. He left a long history with the Aguanga area and the San Diego Co.
